Planning Your Week With ChatGPT Vision

An introduction to GPT-4V and how to get started

If you haven’t heard, ChatGPT Vision is the new AI on the block. What does it do, exactly? You can upload a photo, and the new model can actually see the picture, read any words, and understand the content. That means you can ask it questions about the image, use it as input for your prompt, have it make suggestions, and more. Before we dive into today’s topic, here are some of my favorite examples I’ve seen:

  • Taking a picture of a parking sign, and asking ChatGPT if you can park in that spot at a specific time

  • Taking a photo of your fridge, and ask it for an idea for dinner

  • Write the code for a simple app based on a screenshot

  • Take a photo of your home gym equipment and fitness goals and ask it to make workout plan for you

If you asked me a year ago, I would never have imagined any of this would be possible. The speed of innovation in this industry is staggering, and if you’re not learning how to integrate this technology into your work and life, you’re falling behind! So let’s dive into a specific use case that anyone can use to get familiar with GPT Vision: an executive assistant to help manage your calendar.

In a previous post, I wrote about how you can use AI to help supercharge your productivity by sharing information about your to-do list and having it plan your day. But now, we can make that even easier!

On Monday morning as you’re planning out your week, take a screenshot of your calendar. Upload that screenshot into ChatGPT-4 (the default model, which now has an image icon in the prompt input field)

Here’s an example calendar I created to demonstrate this task, that I uploaded to ChatGPT:

And now, for our initial prompt. Since this model is new, I like to first make sure it’s accurately reading the image. So my strategy is to verify its comprehension in one step, and then move on to planning my schedule in the next:

You are a time management expert who excels at creating optimal plans for peoples workdays. I have uploaded my calendar for this week, and in a minute, I am going to share my to-do list for the week. I would like you to help me plan out my days, and suggest the optimal meeting schedule to allow me to accomplish my tasks.

I would like you to first look at this image, and tell me when all of my currently scheduled meetings are, so we can make sure you read it correctly. After that, I will give you my task list and the estimated time I need for each task.

Any task that takes more than 2 hours should include a 30 minute break, but ideally the task should be done within one day. At most, split over 2 days. Also, I need 1 hour per day to do admin work like reply to emails and messages, and I need 1 hour per day to tackle urgent items that come up.

Do you have any questions before we begin?

ChatGPT will print out what meetings it sees you already have scheduled, and take this opportunity to verify and correct. It might also ask you some clarifying questions, which you can answer. Then, upload your task list along with how much time you want to block off for each item, and voila!

Hopefully this tutorial not only helps get you familiar with how ChatGPT Vision works, but also creates a great schedule for you. Remember, you can do this every morning as your calendar and priorities shift to help plan your day and keep you on track. GPT-Vision is just getting started, and I’m excited to see all of the incredible use cases that arise!
